1. Age Of your heating system
Most heating systems are designed to be used for 15 to 20 years. Your unit, however, will begin to lose efficiency after a couple of years and then begin to decrease about five percent per year after the first five years. If your heating system is ten years old, it could be using 30 percent or more power than it was when you first purchased the unit.
The age of the heating system will also make a difference because newer technologies have evolved that make units more efficient. Smart technologies and improved designs have made new units use less energy while providing the same comfort levels in your home.
2. Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency Rating (AFUE Rating)
If you look at the manufacturer's specs for your unit, it will provide you with an AFUE number. The number will be between 1 and 100, with higher numbers being the most efficient.
In general, numbers over 80 are standard in areas like Chicago, where climate control is continually used. However, you can find units that are now operating with rankings over 90. These higher rankings result in lower electricity consumption and lower bills.
3. How Often Does Your Heating System Require Repairs?
If your heating system continues to break down, it may be a sign that the unit's overall performance has declined. When a furnace gets older, it has to work harder to provide the same service. This requires the use of more energy. If the unit has to receive continual repairs, you may be paying out more in repairs and utility bills to heat your home. It is probably advisable to replace the heating system at this time so that you save money on repair costs and lower your monthly gas/energy bills.
