Dolomite was found when digging the canal, and soon afterward, limestone quarrying started in the area. From then on, Lemont became a manufacturing and agricultural area supplying Chicago with goods and services.
The area is one of the oldest settlements in the northeastern part of Illinois, and the downtown area has been in continual use since the 1800s. Many of the original buildings are still in use in this area, and downtown Lemont is now part of the National Historic Register.
Lemont still has many of the buildings that were constructed using the "Athens Marble" quarried in Lemont. The area is also home to magnificent churches, the Argonne National Laboratory, and is part of the Illinois-Michigan Canal Heritage Corridor.
